Driver's ed

30 to 40°C. That’s what everybody told me to expect here. Instead I got yet another day with temperatures in the 16 to 22°C range and rain. It started shortly after I left Pag island and didn’t stop yet. The weather forecast is also bad until at least Friday, so I’m looking forward to my next stays…

Since the weather front came from the north I even tried to outrun it using the highway, but it was in vein. Given the weather didn’t make for many good pictures and the ride was more of what I’ve had yesterday, I’ll spend today’s blog post doing some Croatian driver’s ed instead.

Route for May 26, 2019

Generally speaking, 120 km/h is the accepted speed (not the limit though, that one does not seem to exist). That includes towns. If the posted speed limit is 30 km/h most people seem to coast at ~100 km/h. For bends there is extra care to take: If a bend is marked with yellow / white arrows, it’s safe to take at 110 km/h. If it’s additionally marked with a speed limit, the limit + 40 km/h is probably fine. If you drive any slower than this, you are officially a traffic obstacle and people will overtake you making this more dangerous than just speeding.

Speaking of overtaking… This is done whenever there is no car coming for 50m or more. That includes aforementioned towns with a speed limit of 50 km/h and bold Škola markings on the ground. If there is a solid line, the cars should give way to the motorcycles for overtaking. If there is a overtaking forbidden traffic sign that does obviously not include motorcycles, since the sign clearly shows a red car and not a motorcycle.

This all changed quite a bit once we entered the city of Split. It turns out they are not all mad, but there is actually another race track in Croatia. They have Grobnik, Opatija, Lika, the E65 as well as the road 8. So it’s all fine after all…

In Split I took the ferry to Hvar, which is a 2h ride. My brother suggested a hotel on Hvar, called Guest House Plava Laguna Hvar (Blue Lagoon Hvar). The ride to the guest house led me over some tiny roads, which barely allowed a car and a motorcycle to pass each other. On top of the hill there was a tunnel with a traffic signal on either side since it was just wide enough for a car. On the other side of it we had some more tiny roads and I finally arrived at my overnight stay…
