More mountains and valleys. And rain.

My body refuses to work if I have too little sleep. I think that’s what we call “aging”. I went to bed around midnight yesterday, the others were still up until at least 3, probably 4 AM. But it was definitely the right choice, since my route for today took around 5 hours according to google, or 6 hours with stops for pictures and the road conditions.

Route for May 22, 2019

At first it went back up north to Trento. I already took that route two days ago, but it turns out I missed quite a few nice pictures on my way south… After Trento it went all the way east through the north of Italy. It’s one beautiful valley after the next one. All surrounded by the same type of mountains.

Shortly after Longarone I enjoyed some nice serpentines, followed by a construction zone and some long tunnels which lead me into one of the most beautiful highlands I’ve ever seen. The mountains surround you on all sides, one more photogenic than the other. In the middle of the flat there was river, turquoise from the rock flour from the glaciers.

The weather was pretty decent for the first 4 hours. I even got some sun shine and at some point even changed to lighter clothes. This is what summer must feel like… But soon after the lunch reality brought me back. A light drizzle started a bit past 2 and it turned into a real shower about 30 minutes before the border to Slovenia. This was especially bad, since the road going out of Italy would have been nearly perfect. Featuring thousands of narrow turns and no traffic at all. In the time it took me to drive this road I’ve seen three bikes going the same direction I did and not a single soul coming the other way.

I arrived in Bovec shortly before 6. I checked in to a hotel and went to the local brewery. They had an okay-ish IPA for 3.50€ per pint. I had some Čevapčiči with Aivar for dinner and spent about an hour talking to some locals at the bar before going back to the hotel to finish up the post for today.

If you’ve alredy seen yesterday’s post, you might want to take another look, since I uploaded the pictures as well now.
